Stay Ahead of the Curve: The Transition to 4G Fleet Tracking.

Stay Ahead of the Curve: The Transition to 4G Fleet Tracking.

Big changes are coming to New Zealand’s mobile networks! By the end of 2025, Spark, One NZ, and 2 Degrees will completely shut down their 3G networks. Additionally, One NZ suddenly announced that its 2G network will also be turned off by the same date—a move that came sooner than anyone expected.

As part of our partnership commitment to future-proofing our devices, Fleetpin has been preparing for this for several years. In early 2020, we became one of the first fleet tracking businesses in New Zealand to introduce 4G devices, starting with our Rugged 4G model. By early 2021, we expanded our offerings with the Cross Country 4G units. Our commitment to staying ahead of technology transitions is rooted in providing reliable, future-proof solutions for your fleet.

The Challenge of Early Adoption

Being proactive hasn’t always been easy. In the early days, our 4G devices were more expensive than the older 2G and 3G models offered by competitors. While others avoided mentioning the inevitable network shutdowns, we educated our customers about why “the G’s” matter. To help spread awareness, we released a comprehensive article in 2022 (updated in March 2024), explaining the importance of transitioning to 4G. Despite this, we know some competitors who continued selling 3G devices up to early 2024. While these devices could fall back to 2G, that solution is now short-lived with One NZ’s upcoming 2G shutdown.

Fleetpin’s Commitment to Supporting You

If your fleet still relies on 2G or 3G devices, it’s time to plan your upgrade now to avoid any last-minute disruptions. We understand that the timing of these network changes could not be at a worse time given the current economic climate and rising business costs across the board. As your fleet tracking partner, we are determined to make the transition as painless and smooth as possible.

To upgrade we’re offering our flagship devices (Cross Country & Rugged models) at cost ($225), and also introducing a low-cost basic 4G option ($148). Unlike many of our competitors, with our 4G devices, you get the added benefit of improved live tracking coverage due to their roaming ability across all three telcos, eliminating the reliance on a single telco (another early adoption initiative we took over 5 years ago). Fleetpin is also more than happy to assist you in roll-outs over time, as well as time payment options to reduce any sudden large capital expenses.

If you have questions about the 4G transition or need help upgrading your devices, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to ensure this change is as seamless as possible for you and your fleet.
